Facebook-Adds-Context-Labels

Facebook announced to start testing labels to articles in USA member feeds to provide more context about what kind of page produced the article and to prevent confusion. It's worth noting that this is a test that is limited to the United States and it may not be live now but they will be rolling out soon

. public official, fan page and satire page are Examples of labels that may be applied

More details about context of Facebook pages:

Understanding the context of an article is the most important because the article makes more sense when there is additional information

As an example some articles in a facebook News feed related to satire. Satire means humor in the form of making fun at people and other entities, but sometimes the satire might be understood wrong to a person who isn’t aware that  this something is just a joke and the title of the article might be taken for real

Facebook tweeted about the new policy saying:

“Starting today in the US, we’re testing a way to give people more context about the Pages they see. We’ll gradually start applying labels including ‘public official,’ ‘fan page’ or ‘satire page’ to posts in News Feed, so people can better understand who they’re coming from.”

Twitter's response to Facebook's announcement reflected today’s political environment and general distrust of big technology

Who will have the ability to apply the Article Labels to Facebook Pages?

The tweet announced Facebook’s new policy introduced an FAQ related to the policy that declares that Facebook Pages will be able to label themselves.

And that's an example about what was in the FAQ:

What About Satire Pages?

They help people sharing social commentary by using humor, exaggeration and absurdity.

Why are they labeled by this title “Satire Pages” ?

Posts from Satire Pages appear similar to posts from public figures or conventional news sources. Pages can label themselves by this title to help in preventing this confusion.”

The quote from an FAQ about the labels implies that the Facebook Pages themselves can do the labeling, then there should be no fears about having an inappropriate label applied.

It appears that Facebook Page admins will have the ability to select their labels, it may still be better for everyone who manages social media with exposure in the United States to control if Facebook adds an article label to Facebook Page posts that show up in member Facebook news feeds and to validate if those article labels accurately describe what the Facebook page is about.
